Best Labor and Birthing Positions

Did you know that most women labor and birth on their back? With their feet in stir ups?

I'm writing this blog post to tell you that there are SO MANY other options to deliver your baby in!

The goal during birth is to optimize the SPACE in your pelvis to allow the baby to exit the birth canal as smoothly as possible. The more SPACE the baby has, the EASIER it is to deliver!

WHAT DECREASES SPACE IN THE PELVIC OUTLET?

Feet turned out, hips turned out, tailbone tucked = all of this decreases the space between the two sitz bones.

WHAT INCREASES SPACE IN THE PELVIC OUTLET?

Feet turned in, hips turned in, lower back arched = all of this increases the space between the two sitz bones.

3 BIRTH POSITIONS TO CONSIDER

1. Supine with a towel roll "U" shape under sitz bones

  • The towel roll is an important piece! This allows your coccyx and sacrum to be able to move backwards to allow baby's head to exit out of birth canal

  • Also have your hips internally rotated (knees together, feet apart)

Birth Positions

2. Quadruped on Birth Ball W/ Hips Internally Rotated and Pelvis Tilted Anteriorly

  • Have your feet wider that your knees

  • Arch your back (to open the pelvis) = lumbar extension

  • Great option for hypermobility, allows for symmetrical opening of the pelvis

3. Sidelying w/ Birth Ball Between legs

  • Have your feet wider that your knees
