The Heart Behind Homemaking

December 2, 2025

As I have gotten "older," I come to appreciate the mundane. The daily.  Ordinary.  Slower living.  Even laundry.  Cleaning.  Cooking. Tidying up my home. The big vacations or milestones do not excite me much more than the small daily wins and blessings.

In my 20's, even as an introvert, I wanted to say yes to everything — travel more, attend every social event, chase excitement, do it all. Those were good things. But witnessing life in the home through my job has made me appreciate the joy in simple, everyday living.  Through my work, I see the parenting, the chores, the pickups and drop-offs, the chaos and laughter. It is everyday life, unfolding right in front of me.

This made me think about homemaking.  I used to think homemakers were limited to mothers.  But in reality, we are all homemakers.

Witnessing Homemaking Through My Business 👨🏻‍👩🏻‍👦🏻‍👦🏻

Since starting my in-home physical therapy business, I have come to witness homemaking in a way I never had before.  This is actually one of things I am most grateful for — at my old job, while most of my clients were mothers, they came to me (in an medical office), which is a much different experience compared to visiting them in their home.

Over 75% of my clients are mothers.  Every day, I see it unfolding in real time — moms preparing homemade meals, tackling endless loads of laundry, tending to their gardens, cleaning bathrooms and carpets, parenting, and creating order in the midst of busy family life.  I see homemaking expressed across a spectrum: single people, married women who stay home without children, stay-at-home moms [and dads] whose kids are at school during the day, and mothers who homeschool.

Homemaking Beyond Chores 🧼🫧🧺🧽🧹

What I have learned is that homemaking is about far more than chores. At its core, it is the intentional creation of a welcoming, restorative place—a space that offers rest, slowness, and grounding in contrast to the fast-paced outside world. Home is where we reset. It is where we return to ourselves.

It is a place where your children can come home and unleash their emotions after a full day of trying to regulate themselves in day care.  A space for your spouse to rest after a long day at work.  A haven where your friends are invited to show up exactly as they are.

There is something deeply comforting about being in a home that feels safe, tidy, minimal, and cared for. Think about how it feels to walk into a space that has been lovingly maintained versus one that has been neglected and full of clutter. The difference is almost palpable.

Homemaking is about enjoying the life that is happening right now, within the walls you dwell in. It is not just cleaning, cooking or completing a checklist of empty tasks. It is about shaping a physical, emotional, and even spiritual environment. You set the tone. You cultivate the energy. You build a place that supports both solitude and togetherness—a home that is cozy, welcoming, and safe.  And one more thought...creating a home is much different than having a home.

The Joy of Slow Homemaking Days 🥘🍳🔥

Every day, I spend at least 20 to 30 minutes caring for my own home. Weekends allow more time for homemaking.  ◡̈   There is also something about the fall and winter seasons where homemaking is especially inviting.

My favorite days are my slow homemaking days: the days I take my time, tidy and clean with intention, do my laundry, burn a candle, and cook homemade meals from scratch. These are often my Saturday mornings.  This past weekend, I made a squash and leek quiche from scratch, completed three loads on laundry, vacuumed my room, and donated two bags of clothes.  These days fill my soul. They are genuinely therapeutic.  I get lost in the moment.

Bringing a Healing Presence Into Others’ Homes 🫧💗✨

Even in my business, as I provide physical therapy from one home to another, I am also contributing to the energy in each client's home.  It is my presence. The quality of my attention.  One of my favorite parts of my role is creating that safe and healing presence, especially for the mothers I work with. It is an opportunity to create a space for them to rest, care for themselves, emotionally check in, do something nourishing for their bodies like movement, and take a break from their routine of caring for others.

We are all homemakers. We all play a role in caring for a home.  We all contribute to creating the environment we live in.  Some members of the home play a bigger role than others.  Whether you are male or female, single or married, with or without kids, you are a homemaker.

Reflection Questions:

💬 We are designed to create.  Creating makes us feel alive.  What kind of home do you want to create for yourself and the people you love?

💬 What part of caring for your home brings you peace or grounding?
