Balancing Faith and Ambition
October 10, 2025
I used to think having big dreams meant I was not trusting God. Making more money. Growing my business. Hiring employees. Maybe even expanding my services, serving more people, or making a larger impact. Accomplishment is not wrong either. Dreams are not inherently bad. The key is inviting God into the process, into the journey itself. What matters is the posture of our hearts, our mindset, and the way we go about reaching those goals.
FAITH VS. AMBITION
When I hear the word ambition, I think of words like goals, achievement, dreams, accomplishment, outcomes, end results, and burnout. I think ambition can be unhealthy and healthy, depending on the root of your heart.
Unhealthy ambition is self-centered. It is rooted in pride, self-glory, and greed. I am reminded of Philippians 2:3: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, consider others more important than yourselves." Worldly ambition focuses on me. You. Personal success. Wealth. Recognition. Building up your reputation.
Healthy ambition is others-centered. It is a heart aligned with God's will. It is shaped by humility and love. And it's a beautiful expression of your faith. Instead of asking, "How will this bring honor and glory to me?" You ask, "How will this bring honor and glory to God?" Another question...instead of asking "How will this serve me?" You ask, "How will this serve others and God's kingdom?"
When I hear the word faith, I think of trust, security, confidence, knowing, assurance, and sustainability.
Another thought that came to mind...ambition is more about the destination—but faith is about the journey. Faith is inviting God into your goals and dreams. It’s measuring success not by revenue, numbers, the number of google or yelp reviews, or how full your schedule looks, but by HOW the process of building, creating, and showing up transforms your heart and character.
When starting a business, the early seasons can feel uncertain and challenging. You may envision becoming a well-known and respected business, generating six or seven figures in revenue, and having a waitlist that stretches for months. Those are inspiring goals, but when our sense of identity, worth, and value depends solely on these achievements, it often leaves us feeling disappointed, anxious, and unworthy if they don’t come to pass. Because there will be slower seasons—weeks when several clients cancel due to illness and your schedule falls apart, or even a recession that slows your business down. Not all your clients may heal 100%. Your worth cannot be rooted in uncertainty or temporary achievements.
FAITH AS A BUSINESS OWNER AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDER
Faith lets go of outcomes.
Faith invites stillness and rest. It allows you to just be—because you trust that God already has the outcome in His hands. It's the journey. It sets you free.
I have truly found stillness and rest - especially in this year of 2025. I no longer crave Friday’s like I used to - honestly, everyday feels like a Friday. The Sunday scaries are gone. I come into my physical therapy sessions with a grounded energy that my clients can feel and feed off of.
Each morning, I wake up genuinely looking forward to seeing my clients and discovering what conversations and breakthroughs we’ll share together. I take some time in the beginning of the session just checking in with my clients - seeing how they are doing on a human and personal level. Rather than diving straight into the more physical pain questions like, “how is your back pain?”
Last-minute cancellations no longer throw me off—I used to feel stressed and upset about the lost revenue, but now I see them with more ease. This means I can instead go on a 1 hour walk at a park, have a longer lunch break so I can chew and enjoy my food, or even drop by and see a friend for a quick visit between sessions. Slow seasons no longer feel like wasted time or setbacks in my business.
I also prepare differently for sessions. I used to map out specific exercises and techniques in advance, but now I approach each session with openness and curiosity. While I may still plan sometimes, I rely more on observation and intuition—allowing movement analysis and the present moment to guide what we do together. I have also let go of the need to "figure it all out" in one session.
I have let go of the need to “fix” my clients, or be “the one” to do it all. Because, I can’t. I no longer feel the need to be anyone’s hero—because that is not my job. I often feel uncomfortable when clients shower me with excessive praise, though I’m learning to receive their compliments with humility and praise God for the work he is doing in me. My role is to walk with people in their pain, suffering, mountains, valleys, and plateaus. Again, to "walk" with them. Rather than "work" on them.
WRAP UP
When you fully trust that God will take care of everything, it changes everything: you begin to take risks, appreciate the uncertainty, step into new opportunities, let go of your plan or schedule, and embrace more of life. It is honestly very freeing. Your emotional and mental state is in equilibrium. You carry this grounded energy.
💬 Do you fully trust God? What areas of your business or life do you find hardest to surrender?
It is okay to be ambitious and successful. It is okay to have big dreams with your business. Do not shrink your dreams. But, focus on the journey, not the outcome. He is a God of big things.
I am reminded of this encouraging verse:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."
-Proverbs 3:5-6
This proverb teaches us to depend ("trust" and "lean") and submit to God, and He will ultimately give us direction and clarity ("make our paths straight").
QUESTIONS:
💬 How has the "way" I do business shaped my heart and character as I pursue my ambitions?
💬 Where in my life can I invite more stillness and rest? What would that look like?
💬 Who is someone in my life I can "walk" with, rather than "work" on?
